I did not like Avatar. Visually it was great but as a story is was awful. No amount of pretty 3d visuals can cure that. A bad story is a bad story. It was like Dances with Wolves in space, even worse! The Na'vi are made out to be so completely "pure" and "peaceful" that I could not buy them as real at all. Where as the humans are so evil (with few exceptions of those who betray their own species) that is stinks of "bad white man" propaganda. Don't recommend it at all. Watch a video game trailer if you want out of world visuals.
Going to the movies has been quite difficult these days. I haven't seen a movie in a theatre since January. Two tiny babies and lots of work have kept me away from the world of entertainment. When The Dark Knight came out, however, I had to find a way to see it! I am a bit of a Batman freak and there was no way I was going to miss this movie.
I made a deal with my wife to see it on Saturday evening in exchange for some extra dishwashing duties. Overall I think the deal was fair. She had to stay with the little ones a few hours alone in the evening, right before their bed time, and I had to wash some dishes.
The line-up for the movie was huge. I got there over an hour before the show expecting a line-up but not that huge of a line-up! Finally the movie started.
I am not that good at giving reviews. My reviews are usually quite simple - I either love the movie or I hate it. Anything in between is a simply "eh". Well I loved "The Dark Knight"; in fact, every other movie up to now that I loved I have to move into "eh" category simply because The Dark Knight is simply so much better. It is by far the best super hero movie ever. Even more, it is by far the best movie I've seen this year (I'm talking about DVDs mostly since I didn't see much of what was in the theatres). Even more, it is the best movie I've seen in years! I sound like a dork but I really liked this movie.
This is not a simple super hero story. It goes so much beyond that. The struggle between the Agent of Chaos the Joker, who is played to perfection by Heath Ledger, and Batman who is constantly tempted to break his one rule, not to kill. The rise and fall of The White Knight, Harvey Dent (played by Aaron Eckhart) who is a symbol of hope to the people of Gotham. It is an experiment in morality. What happens when people are pushed to their limits. What happens when chaos rules.
There is more I could say but I won't. Go see this movie. Go see it now.
I wonder what chores do I have to do to see it again...
Somewhere in Northern Russia in a small Russian Orthodox monastery lives a very unusual man. His fellow-monks are confused by his bizarre conduct. Those who visit the island believe that the man has the power to heal, exorcise demons and foretell the future. However, he considers himself unworthy because of a sin he committed in his youth. The film is a parable, combining the realities of Russian everyday life with monastic ritual and routine.
I'm very glad that I have heard about this movie. It is beautifully shot and the story is intriguing. This movie is about repentance and God's providence. I highly recommend it to everyone.
